I raised my daughters to say please, thank you, and always show kindness and respect to others. I could take them anywhere without fear of embarrassment. But, in the privacy of our home, they were under the impression those rules didn't apply when they interacted with one another. So, I decided to set a new house rule: They were always to treat one another like strangers. They laughed, thinking it was the silliest rule they had ever heard, I told them to think about how nice and considerate they treated their friends, but even more, how they treated strangers. "But, we're family," they said. I replied, "Exactly! You will never see strangers again, and you will have friends come in and out of your life, but very few will be lifelong friends. But, you will be sisters forever, cheering each other on through the good times and offering hope and comfort through the bad times. Always remember that." It was a rule that required a reminder quite often, but it was also a rule that they have carried into their adult lives. My oldest daughter, who is a charge nurse at a healthcare facility even uses it with her staff... Guess it wasn't such a silly rule after all!
